Farfetched Farm Breeding Schedule: Spring 2021

Every year, we put a lot of thought and consideration into selecting our breeding couples. One of the first things we learned is that color is not supposed to matter with exceptional quality dairy goats. We say "hooey" to that! Our opinion is if you are purchasing an animal that you will have in your family, watching it every day for possibly the next 15 years, you should absolutely love the look of it. While we think about lineage and dairy characteristics, we also get excited about potential color and pattern possibilities. We shoot for flashy, colorful kids with great temperaments, since no matter how attractive your goat is, if he or she is not super friendly, then you will not really enjoy them.

Color breeding is not an exact science, but there is some predictability. If you breed a blue-eyed to a brown-eyed goat, you will get slightly more than half blue-eyed babies. A patterned goat is likely to have patterned babies, but there are always
some surprises that can't really be predicted. It's one of the most thrilling parts of breeding goats, every year something new and unexpected.

Breeding Philosophy | Farfetched

Rosie + Zydeco

Rosie is one of our most beautiful does. Every year she gives us some of the prettiest kids. Last year was no exception.

We were so excited about our babies from this combination last year that we are repeating the breeding with our super- buck, Zydeco. Last year we got a flashy black and white buckling with blue eyes, and a gorgeous dark chocolate and white dalmatian doeling with chocolate eyes. We are looking forward to more flashy kids this year from these two lovebirds.

**Blue Eyes Probable

***Flashy Dalmatian Pattern Highly Likely

Donahue + Shango

I call Donahue our “Pretty Irish Lass” because of her Irish-sounding name and pretty blue eyes. She is a gorgeous pastel buckskin, with lots of silver roaning. She consistently produces some of the prettiest kids. Her boyfriend, Shango (Vodou God of Thunder), is the grandson of one of my favorite does of all time, Dragonfly Electra, and I waited a long time to get a buckling from his dad, Nikola Tesla. I bred these two this past year, and the results were predictably amazing- triplets, a dark buckskin girl with blue eyes, a mostly white flashy doe, and a dashing black, white, and silver buckling with blue eyes. Repeating the breeding and looking for more splashy kids this year.

**Blue Eyes Likely

Siena + Chomsky

I sought out Siena for her Chenango Hills pedigree, and Chomsky is the Rosasharn buck I’ve been wanting forever. They both have made gorgeous kids so far, and combining these two is going to be an exponentially RED combination. Can’t wait to see what these two lines do together, but I have a feeling it will be RED, RED, RED! Every year we have a few kids that look like tiny baby deer, and if any breeding will produce these, this will be it!

Valkyrie + Zydeco

When I saw the picture of Valkyrie, I put a deposit on a doeling of hers for the next season. By a strange twist of fate, I ended up with her instead, and she still takes my breath away! She’s pretty impressed with herself, too, but hasn’t seemed to convince the rest of the herd that she’s the Queen, yet. This year, we’ll breed her to Zydeco, and see if combining these two powerhouses will make super-kids!

Kalypso + Cupertino

A young couple, Kalypso is an elegant dark red chamoisee first freshening yearling, and Coop is an unusually colored, moonspotted little guy, born this spring at our sister farm in Amsterdam, NY, Eros Suncatcher Homestead. These two beauties are sure to make some lovely kids. We’re ready for some surprises with this pairing!

A pretty blue-eyed first freshener, who is the daughter of a doe I’ve admired for years, Doubletree Checkers, joined for her yearling fling to our spitfire studmuffin, Shango. Luli’s latin name means “White Lupine.” She’s a dream and the friendliest sweetie imaginable. Shango has produced some really nice kids so far, and with Luli being such an absolutely gorgeous young girl, we’re really looking forward to seeing what these two create together!

Bela + Chomsky

Embelish (Bela) is the sweetest, most soulful doe, who has the kindest disposition. She adopted our two yearling girls as her own when they first came to the herd as 8-week old doelings last year. Bela will even agree to nurse kids who have been rejected by their own mothers (this happens occasionally: usually the runt when there are triplets or quads). She has really nice colors, and all of her kids have been very attractive. Pairing her up with our philosopher, Chomsky, who is our mellowest buck, bringing his calm demeanor and flashy moonspots to the mix. We’re expecting very pretty kids who are extremely friendly, like their parents.

**Moonspots possible

***Roan/silver buckskin or red/gold color variations likely

Danacka + Zydeco

We call Dani (Danacka) our Long-Legged Beauty! She’s a colorful, confident doe, who has taken a leadership role in the herd after the death of our pair of 13-year old Dragonfly Queens died last year (about two months apart- they were our first goats, from Dragonfly Farm, raised together and bonded for life). Dani is the best milker of the bunch, with a soft pliable udder with lots of capacity. The milk basically pours out! We decided to breed her with our super-stud, Zydeco, to see if we can get some blue eyes to add to that awesome milk production!

**Blue Eyes Probable

4/12/21: 2 chocolate dalmatian bucklings; 1 chocolate dalmatian doeling

ALL THREE KIDS RESERVED

Dam: AGS Doubletree Hiddle-Dee-Dee (AGS Doubletree All Puckered-Up x AGS Doubletree Widdle-Dee-Dee)

Orisha + Zydeco

Most years we don’t keep any of our kids, preferring to seek out kids from other desirable lines to increase our herd’s diversity. Orisha was an exception: She is the daughter of Capra Salato TW Siena, who is a daughter of Chenango-Hills Phoebe. The Chenango Hills line is one of the first and most esteemed lines of the Nigerian Dwarf breed, with lots of champion dairy records. We got Siena already bred to a flashy cou clair buck from championship lines at Capra Salato in Maryland, so when Orisha was born, with the Chenango Hills pedigree, blue eyes, and cou blanc pattern, we knew she was a keeper! We bred her to Zydeco, since he throws such beautiful kids and has the great Wood Bridge pedigree, so we’ll see what kind of superstar kids we get!

**Blue Eyes Guaranteed (both parents have blue eyes)

***Cou Blanc or Cou Clair likely

4/12/21: Two black and white bucklings with blue eyes- One dalmatian; one cou blanc

Chimera + Parrot

This striking doe caught our eye when we visited Capra Salato Farm a few years ago to buy our doe, Siena. Since then, she has haunted us and we still talk about her. When the opportunity came to purchase her, we jumped at it. Yes, that is a giant moonspot that covers half Chimera’s face and her neck. It gives a dramatic half-moon look to her face, especially with her blue eyes.  She is already bred to a buck owned by Capra Salato. These kids are destined to be absolutely dazzling.

Some 2021 Babies

Wowza!

Our Livestock Guardian Dog:

Several years ago, we became worried about predators and people walking off with our goats. After seeing the movie “Oddball” about a Maremma Sheepdog that almost single-pawed saved an endangered Victorian penguin colony on Middle Island, Australia, we decided this was the breed for us. We were on our way to owning a Livestock Guardian Dog (LGD).

Living significantly longer than the larger LGD Pyranees dogs they resemble, that often only make it to 8 years old, the Maremma Sheepdog breed tends to be much smaller, barks less, and lives on average 12 to 15 years, closer to standard-sized dogs. They originate in the Italian Alps, and are an independent and fierce guardian of sheep and other livestock. They say if you have almost any type of predator around, one Maremma will do the trick. However, if you have bears, you need two!

Maremmas are not the easiest breed to locate. We got ours from a sheep farmer in Binghamton. Our dog’s mother is a full-time livestock guardian, which is what we wanted. She was outdoors guarding livestock and poultry with her mom from Day 1.

MAZIWA “ZiZi”

We named her “Maziwa” which means “Milk” in Swahili, both for her color and because she is the guardian of the milk. We are hoping to have litter of puppies and retain a daughter to help her with her farm duties.

To accomplish this, we needed to find a mate for Maziwa, and we were fortunate to make some friends who have a Maremma male whose parents were imported from Italy. He is a massive young stud who guards his owners’ large farm beautifully. We are just waiting for “ZiZi” to go into heat, and we hope to have puppies this year!

The puppies will only go to farms that intend to keep them as Livestock Guardians, since Maremmas are not suited to be exclusively indoor house pets. We love to bring our girl inside for socializing with the other dogs and people, but she’s a working dog, and is happiest outside guarding the homestead.

“Maziwa”

(Swahili for “Milk”)

Known fondly as “ZiZi” for short.

ZiZi was born on a cow and sheep farm in Binghamton in 2018 and has been living in our barn with the goats since we brought her home at three months old.

Maremma Puppies!

It worked! We had five Maremma pups born 4/30/21- four girls and a boy. The family of one of the girls we sent to work on a farm had her DNA tested- 100% Maremma Sheepdog!

Keeping One- All Others Reserved and going to family farms.
